1. Freight rates and costs

When shipping air freight, standard air freight rates are calculated based on the volume and weight of the package. The total cost is affected by a number of factors, including the distance between your location and the destination, the size and type of shipment, route planning considerations, and other air freight options.

According to a World Bank study, the cost of standard air freight is 4 to 5 times that of equivalent road transport and 12 to 16 times that of sea freight. Because air freight is more expensive than other modes of transportation, it may not be the most cost-effective option if time is not an issue and you want to save money.

2. Transit Period

The short transit time is one of the primary advantages of air freight. Transit times for air freight shipments along one of the shorter major routes (for example, London to New York City) are typically between 8 and 12 hours. Shipments via a longer or alternate route (for example, Shanghai to Chicago) can take up to seven days. Shipping times along major ocean routes (for example, Shanghai to Los Angeles) are typically 13-15 days. Longer routes can take up to two months to complete.

One of the primary benefits of air freight is speed. There is no faster way to ship time-sensitive cargo (for example, perishable goods) or if your business depends on on-time delivery than by air. You can save even more time by enlisting the assistance of a qualified air freight forwarder who understands the complexities of international shipping.

3. Dimensions and weight

The size and weight of the cargo are two of the most important factors to consider. Air cargo has the most restrictions on cargo size and weight due to the limited space available on cargo aircraft. The high costs associated with airfreight services are primarily caused by fuel costs, although environmental and political factors are also significant.

The weight charges for airfreight should remain manageable if you primarily need to send small packages. With industry-specific solutions such as On-Board Couriers (OBCs) and specialized couriers who can fly to any destination and hand-deliver smaller items, you can save even more time.

When it comes to large and heavy shipments, airfreight can quickly become very expensive and should be considered only when the product is time-sensitive. In the case of larger shipments, a dedicated air freight forwarder can assist you in making the right decision and minimizing unnecessary costs.

4. Packaging type

The content of your message will also affect the way it is sent. Typically, air carriers will not ship dangerous materials (e.g., flammables, corrosives, hazardous gases, explosives, biohazardous materials, certain types of medical supplies, etc.) unless they adhere to a strict set of rules and guidelines. According to the IATA, Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) manual, hazardous or dangerous substances are defined, what hazards they pose, and how they should be labeled and identified.

Additionally, the DGR outlines the rules and regulations that air carriers, airlines, and shippers must follow in order to move sensitive cargo safely and legally. It also ensures they pass through customs clearance. Dedicated airfreight experts can assist you in understanding the many national, regional, and international regulations related to hazardous materials.
