Located 23 km east of central London, Heathrow Airport is a 4F international airport, a gateway international aviation hub, and one of the busiest airports in Europe. The airport is located in the southern part of the Greater London Borough of Hillingdon, England, the United Kingdom of Great Britain, and Northern Ireland.
The Great Western Airport opened in 1930 as a simple private airport; during World War II, the airport was requisitioned to build the military Highendon Airport; on January 1, 1946, Highendon Airport was renamed London Airport and its nature changed to a civil aviation airport; in 1966, London Airport became Heathrow Airport; in 2006, Heathrow Airport was upgraded to a 4F class airport.
On the official website of Heathrow Airport, it was reported in July 2020 that the airport had four terminals, T2 measuring 40,000 square meters, T3 measuring 98,962 square meters, T4 measuring 105,481 square meters, and T5 measuring 353,020 square meters. Two runways and two airports surround the civil aviation apron, which has 212 aircraft slots, including 133 near-airport slots, 64 far-airport slots, and 15 cargo aircraft slots. Both runways are 50 meters wide and 3902 meters and 3658 meters long, respectively.
During 2019, Heathrow Airport processed 80,884,310,000 passengers, up 1.0% year-on-year; 1,587,451,000 tons of cargo and mail, down 6.6% year-on-year; 475,861,000 aircraft movements, up 0.1% year-on-year, ranking 1st in the UK.
